After seeing the devastation the 2004 tsunami of the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia first hand, Roy van Broekhuizen along with his wife Louise, formed Laga Designs International, Inc. to provide an income, refuge and hope for the survivors of the disaster.

Their beautiful bags, handmade by the women survivors of the tsunami, include embroidered handbags, wallets, beaded purses and gorgeous travel bags.

…This year my number one New Years resolution, was to be more environmentally aware. I know, a big ask for some of us. I resolved to take responsibility for my actions, to try and reduce, reuse, and recycle, to grow my own organic veges, etc. But a big piece of the puzzle, that I forgot, was to be responsible in my purchasing.

What I mean, is to think about where my purchased food comes from, where my clothes are made and what they are made out of, who makes my shoes, what conditions did the person who made my ‘cheap’ handbag work in?

Which brings me to the subject of my website, Handmade bags, I love bags, so thinking with my new ‘responsible purchasing’ mindset, I decided to find out what was available out there in the way of handmade bags, that met most if not all of the criteria in the preceding paragraph. And yes, people are doing their bit, for the environment and each other.

I hope to include articles and websites on how to make your own unique handmade bags, where to buy beautiful handmade bags, and introduce you to talented handmade bag artisans! As well as how people like you and I are making a difference.

We can all do our little bit to help by thinking about our own spending habits, and remember that what we do as an individual really affects the life and health of the world around us.
